Broadcast journalist Julius Babao has a grand night at the 13th KBP Golden Dove Awards held last Sept. 15 at the Aliw Theater at the Star City. All of his shows with ABS-CBN bagged awards in different categories. “TV Patrol” was honored as the Outstanding News Program for TV, he was bestowed the Outstanding Magazine Talk Show Host for Radio for “Magandang Morning with Julius and Tintin” and “Magandang Umaga Bayan” which is celebrating its 8th year anniversary this month won Outstanding Magazine Talk Show in TV-Manila.
“I’m elated,” he expressed of the awards his TV shows won.
The awards were tasteful icing to his hard work and dedication to his profession as a broadcast journalist, and another accomplishment of his career which he considers a milestone in his life was the realization of his goal as the anchor of “TV Patrol.” This for him came at the nick of time when things weren’t looking bright for him with ABS-CBN. And he thanked his patron saint, St. Anthony, for once again hearing his plea and granting his prayer.
“Since college, I’ve always wanted to be a newscaster. And I’ve always wanted to be in ‘TV Patrol’ kasi for me, ito ang benchmark ng pagiging isang broadcaster. And you are given a big responsibility in your role as a newscaster,”he explained.
He added that through the years, his work in “TV Patrol” has been a collage of the many influences he had as a broadcast journalist - from Ka Kiko Evangelista to Noli de Castro.
“TV Patrol” requires you to have high energy when delivering the news…I found my own style from my years of experience as a news reporter. It also helps to be in radio.”
With regards to his devotion to St. Anthony, he said it began when he and his wife Tintin Bersola went in a pilgrimage to Padoba in 2000. On St. Anthony’s crypt where they saw numerous letters and prayers and pictures, they posted their own. And so far most of what they wished for had come true. This included “TV Patrol” and their baby. This and many more like where he and Tintin would get married became signs for him to maintain a devotion to St. Anthony.
“When we were looking for a place to get married, our Ninang told us to go to St. Joseph Church in Antipolo. We went there and we liked it. But we were surprised that it had a picture of St. Anthony. Yun pala nagkamali yung ninang namin sa name, it was San Antonio de Padua Church…San Antonio kasi yung patron ng mga nawawala o kulang sa buhay mo…isa sa hiniling ko yung maupo sa “TV Patrol,” he shared proudly.
As a devotee, he and Tintin have already decided to name their child, Marco Antonio, if turns out a boy, and Sophia Antonia, if its a girl.
Another celebration in Julius Babao’s career is the 8th year of “Magandang Umaga Bayan” a 5:30 a.m. TV-magazine show which he started with Panjee Gonzales before as “Alas Singko Y Medya.”
For its celebration, “MUB” held a special show for their audience last Friday. Gimmicks included them choosing 150 Very Important Viewers through text-messaging. And his co-hosts Erwin Tulfo, Bernadette Sembrano and wife Tintin Babao joined previous anchors of the 5:30 a.m. slot for a nostalgic TV anniversary celebration.
“Compared before hindi lang show namin ang nagbago but our audience too kasi lumaki sila. Ratings namin before two points, three points, four pints…kami ang nagsimula nito and wala pa kaming competition before. Through the years we accumulated an audience.”
Jake Maderazo, the man behind the popular 5:30 morning show shared that his idea was first laughed at when he presented it. It took all his convincing prowess to finally get a go signal from ABS-CBN to produce it. Fortunately for him and “Alas Singko Y Medya,” the show was one of the big three earners of ABS-CBN. It was a show he experimented on and its success brought more experimenting in it as more and interesting segments were added through the years. This he explained was due to their audience’s desire to watch something new all the time from “MUB.”
“We started the trend. At the height of our experimentation, kumikita kami ng R1 million a day. We started the polling center with one phone for yes and another for no. Pati yung voice mail system kami nagsimula…when we started, our thrust before was, hindi lang naman yung kabilang TV station ang kalaban namin but also radio. So at the height of the popularity of “Alas Singko Y Medya,” we were outrating and defeating a radio in revenues, pati FM radio nadamay sa amin because everyone was watching the morning show,” he proudly shared.
The challenge he added, would be based on the technology used. He said that the show is technology driven especially on its content and its delivery. At the moment high-speed-Internet users can go to ABS-CBN’s website, click on ABS-CBN Now and can view the whole program for the day of “MUB.”
On the other hand, Julius pointed out that the success of “MUB”or “Alas Singko Y Medya” for that matter was because of his good working relationship with the other hosts. They should project and be a real barkada in the morning for their audience.
“When me and Tintin left the morning show, hinanap kami ng loyal fans namin. Kasi dapat you are like a member of the family of your audience. They can identify with you. They know your life and alam nila ang mga nangyayari sayo. Unlike with a news personality na nagbabalita they are not much concerned about your life behind the camera. Pero sa “MUB” or “Alas Singko Y Medya,” you should be connected with your audience pati sa pagsasalita mo and pati pagharap mo sa kanila.”
Having highly rating and awarded shows, soon to be father Julius Babao is eyeing another accomplishment in his broadcasting career. Citing the trend on television of news anchor having their own shows, he hopes to have his own solo TV show someday. He wants a program that tackles hard news!
Other winners from the 13th KBP Golden Dove Awards were Ka Kiko Evangelista for the KBP Lifetime Achievement Awards, Outstanding AM Radio Station for DZMM Radio Patrol 630 and Outstanding FM Radio Station for DWRR 101.9 For Life!, Outstanding News Program for Radio for “7am Radyo Balita,” Outstanding Public Affairs Program for ADong Puno Live (TV-Manila), and “Korina Sa Umaga (Radio),” Outstanding Newscasters for Korina Sanchez (TV-Manila) and Angelo Palmones (Radio), Outstanding Public Affairs Program Host for Noli de Castro (TV-Manila) and Atty. Alfredo Lim (Radio).

dito ako sa california. napapanood ko yung saksi dito, channel 18 siya sa amin (pasensya na, nakalimutan ko yung pangalan ng channel) dati kasi alas-kwatro siya ng hapon ipinapalabas. ngayon alas singko na siya, kasabay ng world tonight (which is from abs-cbn) sa channel 95 (international channel). hindi ko alam kung may kinalaman yung gma at abs sa pagsasabay noong dalawang news, pero hanggang dito ba naman eh kelangang mag-agawan kayo sa ratings? nakakasawa na kasi eh.
but anyway, mas gusto ko yung delivery ng news ng saksi kesa sa ibang filipino networks, not only abs. kasi 1) it’s all about facts, walang halong opinion ng newscaster (kasi in the first place, opinions of the newscaster are not relevant and are not news, unless may editorial segment), and 2) maka-masa ang dating pero hindi salitang kanto ang ginagamit, nandun pa rin yung professionalism. galing!
baka naman, magagawan ninyo ng paraan na updated ang news na mapapanood namin dito, yung tipong monday night news sa pilipinas eh monday night din namin mapapanood, hindi 5 days old.

hi we all at cebu city and negros occidental wonders why xhunterx schedule change millions have been watching it pls put it back in the same schedule we cant watch it anymore since its gone and here in cebu and negros there is no more xhunterx this happend also b4 the ko or tko we where all watching and sudenly all gma changes the schdule this is unfair 2 all people who r watching pls put back xhunterx in the right time back

At yang show ni Carlos Aggassi…i tried watching it to compare….wala gaya pa rin….It is soooooo very obvious na tapos na ng EXTRA-CHALLENGE yun episode nila tungkol sa “buhay na patay”….at walang delikadesa…isang linggo lang yata ang pagitan at ginaya na rin ung “Mga Babaeng Palaban” episode.
