Bubble Gang Gets X for Political Spoof
One of the political spoofs of Bubble Gang that got X’d was supposed to be shown last June. Jo-Ann Maglipon writes about it in her column in the Inquirer. The article can be read here. Laughter is empowering. Silencing laughter is the worst kind of censorship.
Take note that the spoof not only makes fun of the President, but also other GMA 7 shows. Because of this incident, Bubble Gang no longer makes spoofs of the President. In continues to make fun of other GMA 7 shows, however.
In June this year, the show’s “4 Oras” segment, playing around with its own network’s “24 Oras,” had Michael V, playing Michael Ricketts, obviously playing Mike Enriquez, interviewing the President, also played by Michael V with buck teeth.
They both appear on split screen: “Magandang gabi po, Madame President.” (Good evening, Madame President) And Madame President greets back, “Magandang gabi naman, Mike.” (Good evening, Mike)Immediately after, before the President can even utter another word, Michael V cuts, all urgent-like: “Huwag po kayong aalis diyan, Madame President, at babalikan namin kayo!” (Just stay there, Madame President, and we will be back in a while.)
It’s obviously an exaggeration of the way news anchors put everybody on hold to give way to somebody bigger, and it’s hilarious. The script goes on that way until this exchange:
GMA: Ang plano ko ay haharapin ang problema ng lumaking utang ng ating bansa. (Our plan is to solve the problem of the growing foreign debt)
Michael: At bakit po lumaki ang utang ng ating bansa?(And why do we have a growing foreign debt?)
GMA: Malaki kasi nagastos ko sa eleksiyon. Ay, mali, malaki ang nagastos ng pamahalaan sa eleksiyon-alam mo na, pag-print ng mga balota, pambayad sa mga teacher…” (Because we spent so much during the elections. No, its because of the expenses during the elections, you know the printing of the ballots, the per diems for the teachers…)
Then somewhere in there, the anchor tells the President she can have 15 seconds to give the country a message. And, in an obvious parody of the hilarious Lolit-Solis clocked thank-yous on “StarTalk,” the President says on TV, even as a 15-second timer clocks her on screen:
“Nagpapasalamat ako sa taong bayan…sa Senado at Kongreso, puwera na lang ang mga oposisyon na nagpabagal ng bilangan. Salamat sa lahat ng nanigurong ako ang mananalo, sa mga sundalong nagbilang ng boto ko sa Mindanao, sa mga politiko ng Cebu…” (I thank the people… those in the senate and congress, excluding the opposition. I thank all who helped ensure that I win the elections, the soldiers who counted my votes in Mindanao, the politicians in Cebu…)
That was it. It was rollicking fun-and it never aired.
Why not?
As far as the “Bubble Gang” team understands it, the MTRCB committee that passed judgment on it was not pleased that the President was made the subject of the political spoof.
Segment writer Romel Lalata puts it this way: “Puwede naming laitin lahat, kahit na si Senador Miriam Santiago, basta ‘wag lang galawin si GMA.”
And the end effect?
The writers don’t do GMA anymore. Thus, GMA, the President, has effectively, silenced political comedy in GMA, the station.
Chief Censor Ma. Consoliza Laguardia, in a phone call, denies this. She says it was “voluntarily deleted by the producers,” although she begs off to do more research on this, as the segment was submitted last June.
Still, she says she had no idea the “Bubble Gang” people had objections to the MTRCB’s judgment and is hurt that they had to go to the media with these.
She notes that no one from the show or from the network had raised the issue with her. “Madali naman akong kausapin,” she says.
In any case, she asks, “Pero di ba offensive ‘yon? Presidente naman ‘yan, and below the belt ‘yong sasabihan ng ganyan, di ba?”
And so it goes… this unfinished business between censorship and art, controls and freedoms, autocracy and democracy.
Question is: Where do you stand?
the mtrcb/censors argues that they only rate movies and it is up to the producer to edit their shows/movies.
however, while the censors tell the people that the choice is made by the producers, truth is, there is no choice. if a show/movie gets x-ed, it means it cannot be shown. therefore, where is choice when only one of the choices is acceptable.
the philippines has too many moralists around. they pretend to know it all. they pretend to be gods when in truth, they are far worse than the devil! with all the moralists around, this country will further go down, economy wise. just think, do the first world countries have as much moralists as the philippines do? these people talk too much about morality and what god is pleased with and what not. let god decide on that. surely, he knows what to do and he can do it himself. he doesn’t need any assistant.
if the censors continue to exist, no sooner, the democracy that we believe we have would no longer be around. we are already in a semi-democratic situation. let us pray that the little that we have won’t be taken away.

i realized this is kinda late for a response.
i’ve read this article when it was first published in inq (tnx to the internet). i believe the mtrcb is entitled to its duties. too much democracy can mean too much independence or rebellion, an overstepping over morals, common sense and decency. censorship can make producers be more artistic in their approach, rather than resorting to cheap tactics like overexposure of the human body.
however, i also believe, that mtrcb must also know its boundaries as a censorship body. movies, yes by all means. tv’s, with caution.
it has certainly no right to have shows submit their episode skits. its like mtrcb being an overdemanding parent that has to give its approval! they must remember that producers are adults, not children for crying out loud, and reminders are only needed. should producers step out of their boundaries, then hand them warnings or penalties/fines. that’s it.
i think its also hightime that tv shows get ratings (like movies: pg13, r18, etc) on who can watch it, giving parents the ultimate responsibility (mtrcb, u can step down a bit, thank you) on monitoring the shows their kids watch. this would also allow programming to progress as they can now safely introduce more mature shows for mature viewers.

one more thing, while bubble gang echoes some of the main sentiment and lifestyle of the public (i for one also feel like there WAS cheating at the elections), it knows how to practice restraint when they know their boundaries. but i don’t think this should include outright non-inclusion of prezGMA. that’s too much. hopefully, the tv monitoring guide will solve problems abt censorship.
but again, bubble gang is all about spoofs, hello! its all about poking fun at society! is mtrcb the concerned that their political spoof will influence the major public? now let me say, please, treat us like adults.

Hindi pa nga umabot ng isang libo. Kaya nga napag desisyunan ng GMA management na itigil na lang ang airing ng starStruck dahil sa lagpka na rating nito. Ano kamo, ang ABSCBN, hindi nagsasabing no/1 sila dahil hindi naman totoo. Oh! Pardon me! Noon pa po nagsabi na ang ABS na sila ang no.1 kaya nga lang ngayon, hindi na dahil nga nawala sila sa pwesto ng pansamantala. Kasi ang ABSCBN, totoo lang sila sa mga tao. Hindi sila nanloloko dahil pag talaga namang no.1 sila, sinasabi talaga nila sa public pero ang GMA7, kahit hindi namamn noon no.1, nagdadadada rin sa publiko. Saka dont you ever say na hindi nagsasalita ng pagiging no. 1 ang ABSCBN noon dahil mayroon pa silang video clips na ipinapakita every commercial na nagsasabing “thank you for making ABS CBN as no.1 in 16 consecutive years. KAyo po ang tunay na no.1″

Saka wag mo ring sasabihing hindi marunong magpasalamat ang ABS sa publiko. Eh kaya nga nila sinabi ang mga katagang KAYO PO ANG TUNAY NA NO.1 as a sign of gratitude to people who brought them to their place.

Kaya pala noh? KAya pala walang international channel ang GMA7 dahil hindi kaya ng budget. Dahil sabi ng GMA7, magtipid tipid muna tayto anak! mahina ang ratings ng shows natin kaya walang gaannong commdrcial dito kaya walang income, so, walalng budget para maglaunch ng international channel. Wag na lang tayong gumaya sa ABSCBN na mayaman dahil mataas ang rating ng show kaya ganyan, may tfc cila. Wag na tayong gumaya total, marami rami na rin naman ang ating nagagaya sa kanila!
