Wednesday, December 8th, 2004Blurring the Distinction inorder to Win
Tuesday, December 7th, 2004ABS-CBN’s marketing strategy nowadays seems to be to blur the distinction between the network and its competition. It lost the ratings war to GMA last mid September, and when it became clear that it is going to be more difficult to reclaim the top slot in the ratings game, the Kapamilya network employed a different strategy. Instead of insisting on the Kapamilya vs. Kapuso debate, ABS-CBN is now trying to say that there is no difference between the two channels.
And so we see Kris trying to talk about Rainier, Yasmien and Jennylyn. Of course they have a movie together, so they must make a buzz that they are together, but does Kris have to say that she watched Magpakailanman’s episode about Jennylyn?
And then to promote Ya Chang, they talk about Jopay. They did not talk about GMA 7 talents when they were promoting ABS-CBN talents before.
My stand? It should be viewers vs. the networks, not dos vs. siyete. ABS-CBN’s strategy is on level of confusing the viewers, not making them choose wisely. I hope the viewers notice this.
It’s Called Stealing
Monday, December 6th, 2004GMA-7 asks ABS-CBN to stop unauthorized transmission of DZBB through TFC’s website [source]
GMA Network has asked ABS-CBN to stop offering GMA’s DZBB-AM as part of the package of Philippine radio stations available for on-line subscription through the website of ABS-CBN’s International Program, The Filipino Channel (TFC).
In his letter to ABS-CBN President and COO Luis Alejandro, GMA Network Senior Vice-President for Radio Operations Miguel Enriquez said that GMA has not authorized ABS-CBN or TFC “to distribute, transmit, disseminate or rebroadcast DZBB through the internet or other means.”
Enriquez emphasized that GMA Network has the exclusive right to carry-out, authorize or prevent the rebroadcasting of its broadcasts and that TFC’s unauthorized distribution or transmission of DZBB through the internet infringes GMA’s intellectual property rights.
TFC offers twenty-six (26) local radio broadcasts in its website apart from ABS-CBN’s radio broadcasts, though it is not known whether they have sought the permission of the other radio stations who own the rights for said broadcasts.
GMA Network also demanded for an accounting of the profits obtained from the radio on-line operations and payment of DZBB’s proportionate share in the same.
Take note how GMA 7 handled this situation. If I didn’t browse one of the deeplinks of iGMA.tv I wouldn’t have known about this. They didn’t talk about it in their programs, and they did not pay some print mediapeople to trumpet the issue.
‘Tantra’
Monday, December 6th, 2004ABS-CBN Interactive, BayanTel team up for online game ‘Tantra’ [source]
ABS-CBN Interactive (ABS-CBNi), the Internet services arm of ABS-CBN, and Bayan Telecommunciations (Bayan Tel), the telecommunications arm of the Lopez Group, has joined hands t to launch Tantra, the new massive multi player on-line game (MMOG) that offers rich 3D graphics and a compelling storyline that is expected to attract serious interest from the growing population of on-line gamers in the Philippines.
Tantra is one of the newest and most exciting MMOGs that have come out from South Korea, where on-line gaming has reached high critical mass. The game offers richly textured graphics and animation based on a story of love and revenge among clans of gods and goddesses. Players can choose from among several exciting and colorful characters to adopt as a role to engage in various quests while going through different multiple levels of fantasy worlds set in colorful and reaslistic landscapes.
“Tantra represents an excellent opportunity for ABS-CBNi to build on its equity to deliver quality interactive entertainment to the youth market,” said ABS-CBNi managing director Carlo Leo Katigbak. “We believe Tantra will further enhance the quality of MMOGs available in the market and will boost the growing popularity of on-line gaming in the country.”
At the same time, Joevel Rivera, BayanTel vice president for product and development, believes the popularity of on-line gaming would further increase demand for Internet services. “We partnered with ABS-CBNi on Tantra so we can take advantage on the growing popularity on online gaming to bundle with our various Internet services like Blast and Loaded pre-paid Internet cards, Sky-Internet regular dialup and Sky DSL broadband connection. While Tantra can be played on any Internet connection from the house or from an Inernet café, on-line gamers who choose BayanTel to play Tantra can expect to get the best Internet connection when playing the game.”
Under the partnershp, ABS-CBNi will take the lead in launching Tantra in the market while BayanTel would provide the network infrastructure to support the on-line game.
Tantra is now on beta session testing where about 14,000 people have already registered to participate. Commercial launch is scheduled in early 2005.

Jason Abalos

[source]
Pinay filmmaker determined to carry on her fight vs Siquijor mining
Sunday, December 5th, 2004EUFEMIA ‘Minnie’ Solomon Crouse may not be as well known as Oscar-winning documentary maker Michael Moore but in the Philippines she is just as much a crusader as her American counterpart.
Two years after her award-winning documentary “The Case of Wilkie Duran Monte: Toxic Chemical Victim” first screened, Crouse is still fighting for the rights of ordinary people.
“Wilkie’s death was a tragedy that should never have happened,” she says.
“And it reflects the total disregard some of these companies have for human life.”
Crouse’s film tells the story of Wilkie, who worked for a mining company on the picturesque island of Siquijor in the central Philippines.
When a machine he was working on broke down Wilkie’s foreman ordered him to syphon off a mix of chemical waste, an act which exposed him to the deadly toxins which the documentary says eventually killed him. He was just 44 years old.
In just 18 minutes Crouse’s film covers the last two harrowing years of Wilkie’s life and the environmental rape of Siquijor by local mining company Goodyield/Lazi Bay Resources, a joint venture with Green Island Cement of Hong Kong.
Discovered by the Spanish 300 years ago and originally named Isla del Fuego (Fire Island) because of the fireflies which made it glow at night, Siquijor is the smallest of four provinces that form the central Visayas region.
But residents claim that what was once an idyllic island has been destroyed by the mine’s operations.
Local environmentalist Cielo Lumacad said the mining company had violated environmental laws and built roads into the limestone quarry through property it did not own.
The company was forced to halt its mining on the island after Crouse discovered it did not have a mining permit.
Crouse’s documentary has been celebrated in the Philippines where it won the Best Documentary award at the 2002 CineManila International Film Festival. At the Brussels International Film Festival the same year it won the Committed Film Championing a Cause category.
For 57-year-old Crouse, what began as a documentary on one man’s plight has become a personal crusade to protect the island’s fragile ecosystem.
Her campaign has not been without pain and sorrow.
Not only did she watch Wilkie endure his slow, agonising death, she has been the target of abuse and anonymous threats. Her home on the island was destroyed by a mysterious fire.
She has fought three libel actions against the company, winning one and having the other two thrown out of court.
Crouse said the company’s total disregard for Wilkie and his plight appalled her and prompted her to make the movie.
“To the company Wilkie represented nothing. He was just a pair of hands. Nothing more,” she told AFP in an interview in Manila where she was preparing her case to have the mining operations on the island terminated for good.
Wilkie Duran Monte died on June 10, 2001 from what doctors described as septicemia.
“They didn’t go into details. In fact at one stage they thought he might have had leprosy. There was no real attempt to find the cause of his illness.”
But Crouse was not always destined to be campaigning filmmaker. A divorce and a car accident in the US in 1988 changed her life.
Having spent most of her adult life in America, where she worked on the NASA space programme and at one time in the physics and astronomy department of the University of Maryland, she found herself having to rebuild her life again.
The car accident saw her hospitalised for months with a smashed hip. Doctors also found that she was suffering from a rare disease called “avascular necrosis” or “bone death”.
Such a diagnosis would have destroyed most people. But despite having to get around with the use of a metal walker she volunteered herself to be part of a research programme at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore on bone joints.
Before returning to the Philippines in the early 1990s she enrolled in a television and film production course in San Diego where she produced her first film called “Women in Travel” which focused on ecotourism in the Philippines.
“Wilkie was my first real documentary,” she said.
“Having moved to Siquijor I first heard about Wilkie from his wife who begged me to try and help him. Seeing the state he was in moved me.
“Wilkie was not an educated man. He was a good man who worked hard to feed, clothe and educate his three children.
“Wilkie did not have to die. But the casual way the company treated him disgusted me. The point I guess I was making with the film was that Wilkie was a human being.
“I know some people have questioned the sincerity of my motives. I know that once you embark on a fight like this, people will take pot shots at you.
“That doesn’t worry me. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinions. But it detracts from the issues that affect us all … our quality of life and the destruction of our environment.” [source]

Eat Bulaga Signs 5-Year Contract
Inc. [source]
