… And Pull Out They Did

Monday, April 25th, 2005

LEADING advertisers have pulled out of show biz TV talk shows, particularly those that have aired stories on sex-video “scandals,” starting this past weekend.

The move was in support of a position letter and signature campaign initiated by award-winning filmmaker and scriptwriter Jose Javier Reyes against scandal-oriented talk shows.

Advertisers asked not to support trashy talk shows

Friday, April 22nd, 2005

If afternoon weekend talk shows are not supported by advertisers, they will mend their ways. This seems to be logical. I hope it will work.

The move of the 27-member artist managers group is a continuation of the drive to curb sensationalist entertainment reportage on TV.

The group earlier sat down with executives of ABS-CBN and GMA 7 to clarify the networks’ “guidelines and standards” regarding entertainment news.

PLDT eyes pay TV venture with US’ Echostar
Apr. 21, 2005

PHILIPPINE Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) said it was exploring the possibility of providing a direct-to-home satellite pay television service in the Philippines through a joint venture with Echostar Communications Inc.

US-based Echostar is a major client of Parlance System Inc., a unit of PLDT subsidiary ePLDT. Parlance has been providing outsourced call center services to Echostar’s direct-to-home subscribers in the US since March 2002.

In a disclosure to the stock exchange, PLDT said Charles Ergen, founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Echostar on Wednesday concluded a visit to Manila to see Parlance’s operations.

“In their discussions, PLDT and Echostar explored possibilities for expanding their call center business relationship, as well as the possibility of providing a pervasive and cost effective DTH satellite pay television service in the Philippines on a joint venture basis,” PLDT assistant corporate secretary Florentino Mabasa Jr. said. Donita’s weight issues in ‘Seed of Contention’

Thursday, April 21st, 2005

One thing’s for sure: she’s taking her director’s advice not to worry about her weight. Donita had ballooned after giving birth to JP in July last year. She said she had since lost weight, but insisted she was still way off her mark.

“Ana assured me that my present weight is okay at the start of filming,” she said. “But as the story progresses and my character goes through all sorts of experiences, like hunger, then I have to look slimmer.”

Donita Rose will play the older sister of French star Virginie Ledoyen in a World War II film intended for international release, according to the actress and former veejay.

The movie is tentatively titled “Seed of Contention” and will be directed by debuting filmmaker Ana Marie Laperal, a US-based Filipina.

Donita, 30, explained that the sisters in the story come from a wealthy Spanish family in Manila during the Japanese Occupation.

Ledoyen, 28, was in Francois Ozon’s “Eight Women,” with Catherine Deneuve and Emmanuel Beart. But she’s more popularly known as Leonardo DiCaprio’s love interest in “The Beach.”

In “Seed,” Japanese soldiers rape Donita’s character, Emma, who is so traumatized, she goes insane. [source]

Old Pinoy Books Online

Wednesday, April 20th, 2005

THE NATIONAL Library of the Philippines (NLP), one of the country’s oldest government institutions, has finally gone high-tech with the launch of its online version aptly called the Philippine eLib (www.elib.gov.ph).

The site features a collection of more than 800,000 bibliographical records from the National Library’s archives. There are 29,000 full-text journals and 150,000 theses and dissertations, many of which are being preserved and cannot be borrowed.

Currently, there are over 25 million pages of international and local materials that can be viewed for free through the eLib website.

The project was jointly conducted by the NLP with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the University of the Philippines (UP).

The DA, CHED and UP also contributed many of its databases to the eLib.

The project received a 166.7 million funding from the e-Government Fund and started the digitization of the NLP’s archives January last year.

Part of the project includes all the books, journals, microfilms, theses, and dissertations in the NLP and other books from the other partner agencies.

For this the National Library installed a total of 158 kiosks across the country. Some of them are in field offices of the DA, DOST, CHED, and some UP campuses.

DOST Undersecretary Fortunato de la Pea, who also heads the eLib steering committee, said the project will allow students easy access to volumes of information from the NLP that are otherwise inaccessible, particularly because many of the books are being preserved.

De la Pea said the scanners they acquired were already sent to the CHED to allow state colleges and universities to scan the books from their own libraries to become part of eLibe.

De la Pea said they acquired book and film scanners to capture the images of all the available publications. Dozens of original works by National Artists that have been digitally copied include the viewable version of National Hero Jose Rizal’s original novel ‘El Filibusterismo.’

“This project will make our historically significant books and journals available to anyone who wants to view them. There are many other books that are being scanned but on the NLP side, we’re already 100 percent in scanning those that are in their archives,” de la Pea said.
