‘Bikini Open’

Jeturian’s latest

After the critically acclaimed sex-comedies like “Bridal Shower” and “Liberated,” Seiko Films sends the summer heat soaring with “Bikini Open,” the latest from director Jeffrey Jeturian.

The film, which follows the fates and fortunes of participants in a bikini contest, is done in what its director calls “mockumentary” (fake documentary) format. Direk Jeffrey says that when he sat down with Robbie Tan to discuss his next project for Seiko Films, all he knew was that he wanted it to be as fun as “Bridal Shower.” But in typical Jeturian fashion, he wanted a comedy that combined humor with wit-in short, he wanted to make a film that would not insult the intelligence of moviegoers.

“I thought of doing a movie on bikini contests that are held in comedy bars, because when you think about it, it’s just another form of exploitation where people will use their bodies to achieve their ends,” says Jeturian.

Scriptwriter Cris Martinez added a new dimension to the original idea when he proposed that they put in a public affairs host sent to cover the event. The role is played by multi-awarded actress Cherry Pie Picache. Her character is so desperate for higher program ratings that she exposes not only what goes on behind the pageant, but delves even into the private lives of the contestants.

That way, the movie turns out to be not just another sex-comedy but a satire. Still, Direk Jeffrey assures that audiences will enjoy watching the film, because aside from the parade of sexy bodies, “this film goes beyond the sex comedy genre. It’s a satire which comments on a serious issue in a funny way.” [source]
